Seminar on Role and Functions of Parliament with Newly Elected Local Representatives of Punjab.

PIPS Outreach and Public Education Desk held a comprehensive Outreach Seminar as part of its mandated function of apprising public about working of Parliament on Jan., 26, 2016 with a group of 75 newly elected local government representatives of Punjab. The Acting Executive Director PIPS Mr Muhammad Rashid Mafzool Zaka introduced the key roles of Members of Parliament i.e law making, representation, oversight and national policy reviews in addition to vision of Parliamentary Democracy as envisaged in the ideals of founding fathers of Pakistan Quaid e Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah as testified by the 11th August 1947 address, the consensus Constitution of 1973 as well as the historic 18th Constitutional Amendment. Former Speaker National Assembly Syed Fakher Imam was the Chief Guest who spoke on oversight of Parliamentary Committees and how Parliament works for enhancing the service delivery of welfare oriented State for its citizens. The absorbing session also threw light on role of local tier of representatives and how through consensus building they can improve overall standard of life in their community. Mr Muhammad Aslam Waseem, Addl Director (legislation) spoke on Comparative Local government Act of four provinces as well as international models of local government, their pros and cons and last but not the least the functions and responsibilities of newly elected Members of Parliament. The Seminar commenced at 10 am and concluded at 2 pm with over 70 local representatives taking keen interest in Q and A session.
